ON THE WHITE DUNES
Last weekend Jackie, Lola and I headed up north to the plains of Pohjanmaa for a nightclub gig. The morning after, before taking the train home, we took a walk on the snow covered sand dunes. It was very cold, all-white creating a dramatic scenery. The photos turned out almost like stills of a film .(Well especially after I added the borders, heh)
Kinds of Indian & Pakistani Embroidery - TYPES OF EMBROIDERY
Embroidery has traditionally enhanced a dress. A look at the various types of threadwork
As far as the world of design is concerned, embroidery is the backbone of India and Pakistan. It has left an indelible imprint even on international fashion like Escada, Lingara and Ferra have their ensembles embroidered in India. Do we know enough about our own embroideries and how to use them efficiently? The thoughtful use of embroidery can enhance an ensemble, and take it from the mundane to the extraordinary. Some Indian embroideries that can do wonders for an outfit are:
Aabla: Mirror work which has its roots in Rajasthan and Kutch.
Aari: Embroidery done on a cot. Also known as khatla work aari originated in Barabanki.
Badla: Flat metallic wire, silver or gilt wire embroidery.
Butas and Butis: Motifs composed of floral forms fitted into paisley shapes derived from the Mughal era.
Lari: Fine quality gold thread embroidery found in Bareilly , Benaras ( Varanasi ), Lucknow and Agra. These days silver zari is equally popular.
Phool Patti Work: Applique work from Aligarh where usually organdi or other fabric cutouts in floral and leaf motifs are affixed on to a plain fabric sometimes in tandem with silver tilla embroidery.
Chikan Work: Originating from Lucknow this involves a technique of finding separated warp and weft threads for a textural effect.
Taipchi: Darn stitch on muslin.
Khatwa: Inverted satin stitch on muslin.
Murri or Phanda: Satin stitch knots.
Jaali: Network.
Phulkari: Flower motifs, geometric patterns, surface satin stitching using silk floss threads. Phulkari has its origin in Punjab.
Zardosi: Leaf-scroll worked in gold and silver thread on silk, satin, velvet and other rich fabrics. Zardosi is also combined with Dabka work and is originally from Lucknow.
Mokaish: Silver dots strewn all over is Mokaish work.
Kashida: Mix of textile embroidery and printing.

Feast of St. Andrew!
El Greco. 1606.
It's the feast of St. Andrew!
You know, ya don't hear quite as much about St. Andrew as the other apostles. But really, that is hardly fair. I mean, he was the first. The FIRST apostle! When Christ was walking by the sea of Galilee, he saw two fishermen, Simon and Andrew. They were of course, fishing, being fishermen. Christ called to them, "Come with me and I will make you fishers of men." And Andrew, then and there, dropped everything and did. He followed Christ. No hemming and hawing and "what do you mean?" or "just let me go take care of this"...he just knew. {Matthew 4:18-22} And so he did. THEN he brought his brother back again, Simon, who Christ renamed Peter (but that's a whole 'nother post, eh?). But yeah, THAT Peter, the St. Peter, rock of the church, pearly gates, the whole shebang. Poor Andrew gets kinda short shrift eh? I think so. But he shouldn't. Would that I had that kind of instant unquestioning sure faith.
So, today I wish the Andrew's I know, a happy feast day. You have an awesome patron. And I pray to St. Andrew that he prays for my faith to increase, and my actions accordingly, just like him.
St. Andrew, pray for us!

Oldsmobile Cars Pics
Oldsmobile was a brand of automobile produced for most of its existence by General Motors. It was founded by Ransom E. Olds in 1897. In its 107-year history, it produced 35.2 million cars, including at least 14 million built at its Lansing, Michigan factory. When it was phased out in 2004, Oldsmobile was the oldest surviving American automobile marque, and one of the oldest in the world, after Daimler and Peugeot. Oldsmobile was General Motors' first brand to be phased out in the 21st century, after the company's Geo and Canadian-market Asüna brands were phased out in the 1990s, and before the discontinuation of General Motors' Pontiac, Saturn, and Hummer brands in 2010.

Happy New Year! Advent
So, one day late, Happy New Year!!
It's the liturgical new year.
The Church's New Year, yesterday, officially (ok, vespers Saturday night).
We are in the first season of the new year: Advent.
I was going to post this yesterday but it was a busy day.......so much for resolutions, even in the liturgical year. Awfully similar to the secular new year resolutions. But as with those, I can still begin again.
Anyhow...
I love Advent. I really do. It it the time to prepare our hearts and souls and minds for the Incarnation, the coming of Christ to this hard broken beautiful world. We get these four weeks, punctuated by four Sundays, to prepare in body and mind and heart - in action and prayer - for our broken beautiful personal world to be ready to welcome Christ, as one of us, come to us, because that is the only way to truly reach us. The biggest of gifts, come to us. Even to me.
Another day, another post is for the doing of Advent. Or the undoing of Advent, perhaps. More later. For now, this is best I think:
Advent begins. Not Christmas, not yet. The preparation of ourselves for Christmas. The expectation, the anticipation, the quieting of waiting. I love Advent.
